Languages Subject Flowchart
The Languages Subject Flowchart helps you and your child understand the engaging and globally-connected pathways offered through the study of Spanish and Japanese. These subjects provide students with the opportunity to develop real-world communication skills while gaining a deeper appreciation of other cultures, traditions, and perspectives.
Studying a language fosters cognitive development, intercultural understanding, and strong communication skills that are valuable across all areas of life. Whether students are passionate about travel, international relations, business, teaching, or hospitality, Languages open doors to diverse academic and career pathways in Australia and abroad.
The flowchart shows how beginning a Language in Year 9 or 10 can lead to VCE Language studies, enhance university entry options, and build essential skills for a globalised world.
Please Note: All Year 9 Languages are offered as a year long subject and students will continue with their chosen language through until the end of year 10.
Year 9 Languages
SPANISH:
Year 9 Spanish is focussed on building language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening to Spanish speakers, songs, texts and participating in games to make the learning engaging and meaningful. The content will be a continuation and immersion of the knowledge developed in year 8.
Students will learn to discuss everyday topics such as family, hobbies, school and travel. Projects students will encounter may involve simple conversations, including and answering questions verbally and written form, writing short texts using correct grammar including pastand future tenses. Spanish culture and festivities will be part of the immersive experience of the learning program.

JAPANESE:
In Year 9 Japanese, students will build on the knowledge and skills they developed in the previous year. The program is designed to strengthen students’ confidence in using the language across speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Students will explore the following four units:
· My Daily Routine · School Life in Japan · Travel in Japan · My Hobbies
Through these units, students will learn to express personal information, ask and respond to questions, describe experiences, and make comparisons between Japanese and their own cultures.
Throughout the year, students will also:
· Revisit the 46 hiragana characters, with a stronger focus on accurate writing.
· Learn additional kanji characters, building on those introduced in the previous year, to develop their ability to read and write common vocabulary used in daily contexts.
· Be introduced to the 46 katakana characters, used to recognise loan words from English and other languages. (e.g. バbaスsu – bus, アaイiスsuクkuリriーiムmu – ice cream).
Students will also participate in a range of cultural activities and collaborative tasks, with a focus on real-world communication and cultural understanding.
