Curriculum and Learning

Our curriculum creates a strong foundation of essential knowledge that students can build upon as they progress through the years. We are passionate about equipping students with the necessary tools, skills, and knowledge to tackle increasingly complex tasks whilst supporting their personal development, voice, and agency. Our aim is to nurture their critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and creativity, enabling them to become confident, well-rounded individuals.

Central to our approach is the belief that a knowledge-rich curriculum provides students with a solid framework upon which they can develop their intellectual curiosity and explore new ideas. We carefully select and structure the content, ensuring it is relevant, engaging, and aligned with the Victorian Curriculum and Victorian Certificate pathways. This enables our students to delve deeply into subject matter, make connections across disciplines, and develop a genuine understanding of the world around them.

We foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment, where students are encouraged to actively participate in their education. We empower students to take ownership of their learning journey, fostering a sense of independence and self-motivation.

Mickleham Secondary College is dedicated to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment where every student can thrive. We invite you to join us on this educational journey, where knowledge, growth, and success go hand in hand.

In Years 7 and 8, students undertake a broad course of studies across all learning areas as prescribed by the Victorian Curriculum. This provides students with the opportunity to build strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, knowledge and learning habits, whilst experiencing the range of subject offerings available at the College.

As part of this program, all Year 7 students’ study both Spanish and Japanese for one semester each, providing exposure to both languages and cultures before selecting one language to continue studying in Years 8 and 9. In Year 10, Languages becomes an elective subject, with the College intending to expand these offerings into VCE pathways in future years.

In Year 9, students continue to study core subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Health and Physical Education, alongside their chosen Language and elective opportunities. Students begin to access increased opportunities for choice and specialisation through elective subjects and academy pathways, allowing them to explore areas of passion, interest, and future career aspirations.

In Year 10, students undertake a more personalised program designed to support preparation for senior secondary pathways. Students continue core studies whilst selecting from a broader range of electives aligned to their interests, strengths, and future aspirations. All Year 10 students are required to undertake either a VCE subject or a VET program as part of their course. This provides students with valuable exposure to the expectations and rigour of senior studies, supports a smoother transition into Year 11, and offers opportunities for extension, challenge, and pathway exploration.

In Year 11 and beyond, students are supported through a range of senior secondary pathways including the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM), and Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs. These pathways are designed to support students’ individual strengths, goals, and aspirations, whether pursuing university, apprenticeships, traineeships, employment, or further training.

Our senior programs emphasise academic growth, applied learning, independence, and preparation for life beyond school.
