Year 9 Subjects

Year 9 is an exciting stage at Mickleham Secondary College as it marks the first time students can personalise their learning through subject selection. This process gives students the opportunity to explore their interests, build on their strengths and begin thinking about future pathways. From Languages to The Arts and Technology, students will be able to choose electives that add variety and challenge to their studies. This page provides an overview of the subject selection process, detailed information about the electives on offer, and guidance to support families in making these important choices together.

What is Subject Selection?

Subject selection gives students the opportunity to choose a small number of elective subjects that interest them. Until now, students have all studied the same subjects, but Year 9 marks the beginning of personalising their learning journey.

While this is their first experience with subject selection, it is designed to be a supported and guided process, helping students to gradually build confidence in making informed choices.

What Can You Choose?

In Year 9, all students continue to study their compulsory (core) subjects:

  • English

  • Mathematics

  • Science

  • Humanities

  • Health and PE

In addition to these, students will select a small number of elective subjects from three key learning areas:

  • The Arts

  • Technology

  • Languages

These electives give students the chance to explore areas of interest, try new experiences, and begin identifying their strengths.

Why Is Subject Selection Valuable?

This process helps students to:

  • Explore their interests and strengths

  • Try new learning areas

  • Gain confidence in making decisions about their education

  • Begin thinking about future pathways, without locking them into any particular direction

Subject selection in Year 9 is about exposure and exploration, rather than narrowing choices.

How to Choose

Students and families are encouraged to talk together about:

  • What do I enjoy learning about?

  • What subjects would I like to try?

  • What skills would I like to develop?

Staff are here to help guide you through the process. Over the coming weeks, you’ll receive more information about the subjects on offer and how to make your selections.

Subject Choices

Compulsory subjects are the core subjects that all students must study, while electives are the additional subjects students can choose based on their interests.
